EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION

The aim was to creatively and graphically interpret and illustrate ideas and issues raised in a supplied text. The development of the illustration in terms of the chosen article: The title “Pet Whisperer” denotes one who has animals/pets under control, understands and is able to tame and control them. The article is light and quirky, the author speaks of his somewhat soft spot for animals yet also he mentions throughout the article that he sees animals, pets in particular, as of low intellect. He concludes by placing emphasis on the fact that humans are smarter than their “beloved” pets. My intention is to place emphasis on the size of the brain of the pet compared to the pet owner. To highlight the “tongue in cheek” message of the author that: pets are dumb.

Theme:

I aimed at a clean (almost imitating a surgical feel), the illustrations come across as a biological anatomical diagram of the human brain versus the animal brain

My illustration

My illustration was based solely on vectors; I chose this as I thought it could communicate the light heartedness of the article well, its almost child like in manner (as the author speaks of the pets) and quirky fun illustrations. The computer arts projects magazine has a tremendous amount of vector illustrations in most publications I chose to go with that style. The illustration needed to communicate the same feelings evokes as by reading the article: Light heartedness, tongue in cheek humor, quirkiness etc.
